The plan for this project is for you to learn and master one of the three remaining chapters and then be able to provide appropriate lessons to teach your peers what you have learned. Included in this should be a lesson with visual aids, activities that extend the work, a real world application (ie a word problem that your students can solve) and finally, an assignment of 10 meaningful problems that you will give for homework.

What to do each day – all to be done as a group:

1) Read each lesson from the chapter and do at least 5 Set II problems from each lesson. Ask if something is unclear.
2) Research other books’ methods to teaching the same topic. Look for applications and extensions. (You may use the teachers’ editions of the different books for different ideas of how to teach the topic AND the Internet for real world application). The county’s Super Tuesday 2008 turnout set a record with 50 percent of the 362,376 registered voters participating. Prior to 2008, the highest Super Tuesday turnout was in 1988 when 35 percent participated. If the population increased by 5 percent from 1988 to 2008, how many more voters voted in 2008 than in 1988?

Option 2: Once the primary votes are tallied, the states’ delegates are divided up based on the proportion of votes each of the “top” candidates received compared to the other “top” candidates. (“Top” candidates refers to candidates receiving at least 15% of the vote in that state.) In Arizona, Clinton had 51% of the vote and Obama had 42% of the vote. Every year on February 2nd in Punxsutawney, PA, Groundhog Phil is called upon to predict how much more winter there will be. If Phil sees his shadow there will be six more weeks of winter, but if he does not see his shadow spring is near. In 2006 Phil saw his shadow. If Phil’s shadow was 25 inches long (when he stands on his back legs) at the same time that a 12 foot tree cast a 15 foot shadow, how tall was Phil, in inches, in 2006?

2. Groundhog Phil’s cousin Henry lives in Moundsville with his family. At the beginning of 2006, Moundsville had a population of 2500 groundhogs but by the beginning of 2008 the population had grown to 3025 groundhogs. If the annual percentage of growth was the same in 2006 as it was in 2007, how many groundhogs lived in Moundsville at the beginning of 2007?

3. Groundhog Henry is digging a new tunnel in a flat field outside of his home. He starts by digging 3 ft straight down and then digs north 4 times the distance that he dug down. At this point Henry digs straight west for 17 ft before running into a boulder. Since he doesn’t know how big the boulder is, he backs up 1 ft and digs 3 ft straight up to the surface. How far is the end of Henry’s tunnel from the beginning of Henry’s tunnel?

Exponential Functions

Chapter 8, lesson 7 - POW - Pick one option

Option 1: Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. His birthday is celebrated each year as a national holiday on the third Monday of January. What is the earliest date in January the nation can celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday? What is the latest date in January the nation can celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday? What is the probability Martin Luther King Jr.’s actual birth date falls on the third Monday in January? Express your answer as a common fraction.

Option 2: On August 28, 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. led a march of approximately 250,000 people from the nation’s Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. His speech at the Lincoln Memorial included increasing the minimum wage from $1.15 per hour to $2.00 per hour. Congress increased the federal minimum wage from $1.15 to $1.25 per hour in 1963. The federal minimum wage did not reach $2.00 per hour until 1974. What is the positive difference between the percent increase in the minimum wage passed by congress in 1963 and the percent increase requested by Martin Luther King Jr. in his speech? Express your answer to the nearest tenth.

Option 3: Assume the federal minimum wage was $1.15 per hour on September 1, 1963 and $2.00 per hour on September 1, 1974. Assume the federal minimum wage increased annually on September 1 by r percent of the previous year’s wage for each of the years during this time period. What is the value of r? Pick one of the following books and read the entire book. Then, write a book report, explaining in detail each of the math concepts described. Provide examples whenever you can. Remember QUALITY is more important than QUANTITY, but your book report should be at least 2 pages so that you can cover the parts. See rubric for details.

Due: Tuesday January 8, 2008.

1.) The Number Devil, by Hans Magnus Enzenberger
One of my personal favorites. You will learn about many interesting mathematical concepts in this easy-to-read, comical dream world.

2.) The Man Who Counted: A Collection of Mathematical Adventures, by Malba Tahan, Patricia Reid Baquero
A beautifully written set of mathematical and philosophical adventures, sited by many as the book that turned them on to math.

3.) Flatland, by Edwin Abbott
A delightful classic written a long time ago which explores dimensionality: l-D, 2-D, 3-D, 4-D. It also has some outdated social commentary. Great if you like stretching your brain to think about really weird ideas. There are a large number of take-offs on Flatland, including Sphereland, Flatterland, and The Planiverse by various authors.

4.) The Boy Who Reversed Himself, by William Sleator
A novel (for kids) about worlds in 4 and more dimensions.

5.) In Code: A Mathematical Journey, by Sarah Flannery with David Flannery
An engaging autobiography about a young woman’s breakthrough discoveries in cryptography.

Simultaneous Equations

1. Choose 1. Due Friday.

POW – due December 14

Option 1. When I was going to St Ives I met a man with seven wives. Each wife had seven sacks and each sack had seven cats. How many legs were there in the group of people and cats that I encountered on my trip to St. Ives? Assume that no one in the group is missing any limbs.

Option 2: When Cinderella’s fairy godmother sent her off to the ball to meet the prince, she had one stipulation: Cinderella had to leave by the stroke of midnight. By the time Cinderella got to the castle, moved through the crowd and met the prince, it was 10:30pm when she finally had her first dance with the prince. If each song lasted 3.5 minutes and they danced the rest of the evening, except for a 20-minute walk they took outside, how many songs did they dance to between 10:30pm and midnight?

Option 3: When the students in Harry Potter’s Spells class at Hogwarts started the year, they knew an average of 10 spells each. Hermione knew the most, 19, and Ron knew the least, 7. If Harry knew 12 spells, what was the average number of spells that each of Hermione, Ron and Harry’s 21 classmates knew at the start of the year? Express your answer as a decimal to the nearest hundredth.

Formulas

Due Monday:

Chapter 6, Lesson 2 - Set I, II and IV (if you wish).

Chapter 6

Read, take notes and complete Set I and II of Chapter 6 Lesson 1.

This is due Friday!

Chapter 5 Test

To study for the test, which is tomorrow:

1. Math Investigation Seminar is open to all students who would like to challenge themselves and explore new concepts of mathematics. Students should be prepared to take on high-level thinking and have fun with math!

What? Math Investigation Seminar is designed to supplement and extend the math curriculum, however, much of what we do in Seminar will look very different from what we do in math class. The topics in Math Seminar will revolve around reasoning, logic, and critical thinking skills as these are the building blocks of intellectual inquiry. The Seminar will focus on developing skills through problem solving, puzzles and exposure to a wide range of topics in mathematics. This week's POW (Due Oct 16):

October 9, 2007 – This week’s POW

On Monday, October 8th, 2007 we celebrated Indigenous Peoples Day. This is also the day that Columbus is credited with opening the doors for European expansion in the America’s when he mistakenly landed on San Salvador while trying to find an alternate route to Asia. Columbus hypothesized that instead of sailing south and then east around the tip of Africa, he could just sail southwest and get to Asia more easily. When Columbus was planning this voyage he packed provisions based on his calculations of the Earth’s size. Unfortunately, he did not realize that the map he was using was in an Arabic unit of measure and not in the Italian unit of measure he thought. As a result, he calculated the Earth’s circumference to be 25,255 km when it is really 40,008 km. By what percent was his calculation incorrect?
